Nathan Eovaldi, Yankees' starter, out at least 2 weeks with inflamed right elbow
Righty was scheduled to start Friday vs. Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays have caught a break in their first-place battle with New York.
After the Yankees beat Baltimore 8-6 on Monday, they announced that starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi would be sidelined at least two weeks with an inflamed right elbow.
The team's most effective and consistent pitcher this season, Eovaldi is 14-3 with a 4.20 earned-run average, but had allowed eight runs and 13 hits over 10 1/3 innings in his last two starts.
While Eovaldi's ERA isn't eye-popping, he did have a 9-1 mark and 3.43 ERA since June 20 and leads the Yankees in victories, innings (154 1/3) and starts (27).
Eovaldi, who ranks second in the AL with an average of 7.18 runs received per game, was expected to start Friday's game against Toronto, which arrives Thursday for a four-game series at Yankee Stadium. The Blue Jays entered play Monday with a half-game lead over New York atop the division.
CC Sabathia is expected to start Wednesday's game versus Baltimore in his return from a chronically sore right knee that has kept him out of action since Aug. 23. He will likely fill Eovaldi's place in the rotation.
Most of the Yankees' top starting pitchers have been injured at some point this year: Masahiro Tanaka (right elbow inflammation) didn't pitch between July 8 and 19; Michael Pineda (right forearm strain) was out between July 24 and Aug. 26; Ivan Nova (recovering from Tommy John surgery) didn't make his big league season debut until June 24.
Also, Chris Capuano (strained quadriceps) was hurt during a spring training game March 11 and made his first big league appearance of the year on May 17; Chase Whitley (torn elbow ligament that needed Tommy John surgery) didn't pitch after May 14; and Bryan Mitchell was out between Aug. 17 and 28 because of a line drive that broke his nose and gave him a concussion.
Rookie Luis Severino and Adam Warren, who shifted to the bullpen when Nova returned, are the only Yankees' starters to avoid injuries.
