Blue Jays trade infielder Cavan Biggio to Dodgers for minor-league pitcher

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired right-handed pitcher Braydon Fisher from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for utility player Cavan Biggio and cash considerations.

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired right-handed pitcher Braydon Fisher from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for utility player Cavan Biggio and cash considerations.

The 23-year-old Fisher has a 2-1 record with a 5.68 earned-run average, 15 walks, and 30 strikeouts in five combined appearances with double-A Tulsa and triple-A Oklahoma City.

Fisher, from League City, Texas, was selected by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2018 first-year player draft.

The six-foot-four, 180-pound right-handed reliever has appeared in 134 career minor league games in the Dodgers' system, posting a 4.53 ERA.

Biggio, 29, appeared in 44 games for the Blue Jays in 2024, batting .200 with six extra-base hits and nine runs batted in, before being designated for assignment Friday.

"I think it's good for Cavan," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. "I was pretty sure he'd land on his feet.

"In terms of what they're looking for out of him, it's a pretty obvious skill set, and with how they deploy their roster, I'm sure he'll be playing against right-handed pitching. He's joining a really good team. It's tough to have him leave."

The Blue Jays selected Biggio, who hails from Houston, in the fifth round of the 2016 first-year player draft.

The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio showed promise as a rookie with 16 homers, 48 RBI and 14 steals in 100 games in 2019 when he finished fifth in American League rookie of the year balloting.

But Cavan Biggio never reached double digits in homers or even had as many as 70 hits in a season since then. He started 34 games this season, 23 at second base.

Biggio batted .227 with 77 doubles, four triples, 48 home runs, and 176 runs batted in over 490 major-league games with Toronto.

He joins a Dodgers roster currently minus third baseman Max Muncy, who is on the injured list with a strained oblique (rib cage muscle).

The Dodgers optioned outfielder Miguel Vargas to Triple-A Oklahoma City after playing in eight games. He hit .250 with three doubles, one home run and four RBI.
