Jeter injured, Yankees downed by Indians: AL roundup

NEW YORK — Derek Jeter limped off the field with a sore right calf four innings after getting his 2,994th hit, and Carlos Carrasco escaped early trouble to pitch the Cleveland Indians past the New York Yankees 1-0 Monday night.   

Jeter headed to a hospital for an MRI exam, which showed a Grade I strain, the mildest type. The Yankees said they would determine the next step Tuesday. He appeared to hurt himself on a flyout to right field in the fifth and left the game.   

The Yankees loaded the bases with no outs in the first against Carrasco (6-3), but he got out of the jam without allowing a run.   

Michael Brantley tripled off the glove of diving right-fielder Nick Swisher in the fourth and Asdrubal Cabrera bounced an RBI single to left field.   

Chris Perez struck out the side in the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances.

Tigers 2, Rays 1

DETROIT — Ramon Santiago's RBI triple in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Detroit a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night, keeping the Tigers in a virtual tie for first place on the eve of their big series against Cleveland.   

With one out in the 10th, Victor Martinez singled off Kyle Farnsworth (2-1). Santiago followed with a drive to the gap in right-center. Center fielder B.J. Upton did his best to run the ball down, but Martinez scored just before the relay to the plate.   

David Purcey (1-0) pitched the top of the 10th.   

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon and pitcher David Price were ejected after a close play at the plate in the seventh.   

Detroit (36-30) begins a three-game series with Cleveland (35-29) on Tuesday night.

Angels 6, Mariners 3

SEATTLE — Vernon Wells hit the Angels' first homer in a week with a solo shot in the third inning, then hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh to give Los Angeles a 6-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

The slumping Angels, having dropped seven of eight, started their longest road trip of the season with a comeback victory capped by a power surge.

The Angels were homerless in their previous 62 innings before Wells' blast with two outs in the third. In the seventh, after Jeff Mathis' slide knocked the ball free from Seattle catcher Miguel Olivo to tie the game at 3, Wells drove a 2-1 pitch from Jason Vargas (4-4) out to deep left-centre.

It was Wells' 22nd career multihomer game and first since last September against Texas.
