Blue Jays ink third-round pick Marisnick

The Toronto Blue Jays signed third-round pick Jacob Marisnick and three other players before Monday's midnight deadline.

The Toronto Blue Jays signed third-round pick Jacob Marisnick and three other players before Monday's midnight deadline, but failed to ink three of their top picks from the 2009 draft.

Outfielder Kristopher Hobson (sixth round), pitcher Andrew Hutchison (15th round) and fellow right-hander Daniel Webb (18th round) also reached agreements with the Jays.

Talks with two left-handed pitchers — supplemental first-round selection James Paxton of Ladner, B.C., and second-round pick Jake Eliopoulos of Newmarket, Ont. — ended without any deals struck. All three decided to take their chances next year and go back into the draft.

The Jays will receive similar picks next year as compensation for letting them walk.

First-round pick Chad Jenkins signed with Toronto on Saturday for a $1.359 million US bonus. The Blue Jays signed 34 of their picks from the draft.

Marisnick, 18, an outfielder from Riverside, Calif., agreed to a $1-million US bonus. That's more than triple Major League Baseball's recommendation of $309,600 for the 106th pick, according to Baseball America.

Scouting websites describe Marisnick as a potential five-tool player.

Webb, 19, re-entered the draft after he was a 12th-round pick of Arizona's in 2008 and couldn't reach a deal with the Diamondbacks. He signed for $450,000 with Toronto, three times the MLB recommendation for players chosen after the fifth round, according to Baseball America. The native of Paducah, Ky., has a 94-mph fastball.

Hobson, 18, of Bakersfield, Calif., is the son of former major leaguer Butch Hobson.

Hutchison, 18, is from Lakeland, Fla.
