Allison Beveridge adds silver to medal haul at track cycling Pan Am championships
Canadian, teammates fall to U.S. in women's team pursuit
Allison Beveridge's stretch of medal performances continued Thursday with a silver in the women's team pursuit at the track cycling Pan Am championships in Santiago, Chile.
Facing the United States in the four-kilometre final, the Canadian squad of Kirsti Lay, Annie-Foreman MacKay, Stephanie Roorda and Beveridge started fast and held a lead of more than one second at the midway mark.
However, the U.S. finished strong, pulling even with Canada with one kilometre remaining and crossing the finish line first in four minutes 21.328 seconds, 0.7 seconds ahead of the Canadians (4:22.077).
"This is a different team composition than we had in Toronto [in July] for the Pan American Games," Canada's coach Craig Griffin said in a statement released by Cycling Canada.
"While the importance of this event as an Olympic qualifier cannot be ignored, we are definitely looking long-term to the world championships in March for peak performances."
On Wednesday, Beveridge captured a silver medal in the women's scratch race. The 22-year-old was a member of the track cycling team pursuit gold team at the Pan Am Games and also won bronze in the women's road cycling race.
In two days, Canada has collected eight medals.
