Double gold for Canada in skicross
Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna, B.C., and Christopher Del Bosco of Sudbury, Ont., won gold Sunday in World Cup skicross action in Lake Placid, N.Y., while Dave Duncan of Golden, B.C., finished third to secure a spot on the Olympic freestyle team.
Serwa outlasted Fanny Smith of Switzerland, Ophelie David of France and teammate Ashleigh McIvor of Whistler, B.C., in an entertaining final. Smith won silver, David captured bronze and McIvor finished fourth.
It was the first World Cup victory for Serwa, the 2009 skicross rookie of the year. The 20-year-old won gold at an event in Alpe D'Huez, France, earlier this month, but only after poor weather forced organizers to cancel the final.
Del Bosco edged out Austria's Andreas Matt, Duncan and American Daron Rahlves. Matt won the silver, while Duncan captured the bronze to knock aerialist Olivier Rochon out of contention for the Olympic team. Duncan needed to finish fifth or better Sunday to make the team.
It was the first win of the year for Del Bosco, who was also awarded gold in Alpe D'Huez.
