Canada's Etienne Briand nabs silver at Miami Judo World Cup

Etienne Briand won a silver medal in under-73kg to lead Canada on Thursday at the Miami Judo World Cup.

It was a four-medal day for the Canadian judokas. Justin Fumiya Imagawa and Arthur Margelidon also stepped onto the podium with bronze medals, while Audree Francis-Methot scored a bronze in women's competitions.

Quebec's Briand defeated teammate Imagawa and earned his berth in the final round where he lost to Cuba's Ronald Girones.

"During the last six competitions, Etienne has been performing very well, which is a very positive sign," said Canada coach Marie-Helene Chisholm. "He [Alejandro Clara] finished third at the PanAmerican Championships, so it's a wonderful victory for Etienne."

Margelidon and Imagawa shared third place and bronze medals in the under-73 kg.

Imagawa earned some hardware with a win against American judoka Joseph Hasimoto, while Margelidon won when matched against American Adam Moyerman.

In women's competitions, Francis-Methot won bronze medal in the under-52 kg category by defeating Ontario's Andrea Madgett with an ippon.

"Audree showed a great deal of potential today [Thursday]. Tis is also her first World Cup medal win," said Chisholm.
