The Current for Feb. 2, 2021
Today on The Current:
In a profession already dealing with high rates of burnout and depression, many doctors are struggling in the pandemic. Matt Galloway talks to Dr. Rod Lim, director and section chief of the pediatric emergency department at the Children's Hospital at the London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ont.; Dr. Ajmal Razmy, psychiatrist and head of service for mental health and addictions at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ont.; and Dr. Jillian Horton, a specialist in internal medicine and medical educator based in Winnipeg.
Plus, the federal government's new quarantine plans are an effort to curb non-essential travel, and to keep COVID-19 variants from coming here. We hear from John Morgan, a snowbird who says he has travelled to Mexico for health reasons; and Kelley Lee, professor of global health policy and a Canada research chair in global health governance at Simon Fraser University.
Then, once-celebrated Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other government leaders have been detained in a military coup. We talk to Ben Dunant, a journalist in Yangon, about the mood in the country; and discuss what happens next with Champa Patel, director of the Asia Pacific program at Chatham House, an international affairs think tank.
And the CBC's Chris Brown discusses extraordinary protests in Russia against the arrest of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and whether that country's strongman leader, Vladimir Putin, is rattled.
