Since December 29, three journalists with Al Jazeera English have been held in an Egyptian prison. Egyptian-Canadian Mohamed Fahmy, Australian Peter Greste, and Egyptian Baher Mohamed will stand trial for allegedly, "spreading false news" and "assisting a terrorist organization."

Today, Al Jazeera English and Canadian Journalists For Free Expression, or CJFE, hold a vigil in Toronto calling for the release of all three men. * Full disclosure, Anna Maria is on the CJFE board *

Daniel Lak is an Al Jazeera English correspondent covering Canada. He is in Toronto.

We requested to speak with Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs. They declined an interview. But government spokesperson, Jean-Bruno Villeneuve, sent a statement. It reads in part:

Canadian officials are providing consular assistance to Mr. Fahmy and are in communication with his lawyer. A Department of Foreign Affairs representative was present during Mr. Fahmy's court appearance as an observer. Senior Canadian officials have raised Mr. Fahmy's case with their Egyptian counterparts, requesting a fair and expeditious trial.
