Can you understand your child's report card?

Five years ago, the Toronto District School Board reintroduced plain English to its report cards. But as one mother tells us, it's hard to make sense of the comments teachers write about their students.

Does your son "demonstrate having had some difficulty following a series of specific instructions or steps to establish priorities and manage time to achieve goals"? Do teachers write of your daughter: "At times she is reminded to stay on task, particularly for literacy centres, so that other peers also benefit from this work time"?

That's what Catherine Porter read about her children on their report cards. It made her wonder: whatever happened to the Toronto District School Board's promise to write in plain English? She shares her thoughts on this week's show.
