Smartphone + solar panel + old bucket = radio station
Prototyping inexpensive radio stations in Uganda with consumer, off-the-shelf products.
Chris Csikszentmihalyi and Jude Mukundane created the RootIO project, which is currently prototyping "radio stations in a bucket" in Uganda. Each prototype has a solar panel, a battery, a transmitter, a smartphone and a white 19-litre bucket to keep the hardware dry. They want to help establish networked radio that can be done inexpensively, and stays rooted in linguistically diverse communities.
