From rock bands to film scores to orchestras, Howard Shore is a jack-of-all-trades

Musician Howard Shore looks back at his career, from his days playing in rock band Lighthouse to composing famous film scores for directors like David Cronenberg and Martin Scorsese.

The score for the Lord of the Rings was composed, orchestrated and conducted by Canadian musician Howard Shore. When the movie was released, its score received mass critical acclaim, even winning an Academy Award, a Grammy, and a World Soundtrack Award for best original score.

Like the movie, it gained a cult following, selling hundreds of thousands of copies and eventually being adapted to a symphony. It may be his best-known work, but prior to Lord of the Rings, Shore had been scoring films for over 20 years. To date, he has a catalog of over 70 film scores, he's composed an opera and conducted symphonies, he was in the band Lighthouse, and he has a decade-spanning working relationship with David Cronenberg.

Shore's latest work is called L'Aube and it's having its world premiere at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Shore joins Tom Power today to discuss this.
