Why Mystery Science Theater 3000 still matters
Creator Joel Hodgson talks about why the cult television show has returned to Netflix.
Joel Hodgson created Mystery Science Theater 3000 in 1988 to make fun of old sci-fi and horror movies. It ran for a total of 10 seasons drawing a cult following, with a feature film in 1996.
But now, courtesy of crowdfunding, the show is back on Netflix. Tom Power, who — full disclosure — contributed to the crowdfunding, talks to Hodgson about why he's bringing back Mystery Science Theater 3000. Hodgson discusses the show's unique connection to its audience, what is was like giving up the host seat to Jonah Ray, and how we should view Mystery Science Theater 3000 in a world with social media.
