Kid Koala offers the perfect way to combat cabin fever with his new album
The winter months in Montreal can be harsh, and being productive in those months is tough. But DJ Kid Koala was determined to fight that cabin fever.
Enter his latest project, Music to Draw to: Satellite (out now), a collaboration with Icelandic singer-songwriter Emiliana Torrini that came out of that urge to find tranquility in the cold months. "I wanted to capture that feeling," he says, of the slowed-down pace of his city.
Another source of inspiration came from film scores, with one of the tracks, "Nightfall," stemming from a Jason Reitman film Kid Koala contributed music to. In fact, Reitman's suggestion to add a singer to Koala's instrumental pieces is what led him to Torrini.
"I've always loved her voice," he explains, of his choice of collaborator. "She can bend so much emotion out of a couple of syllables sometimes [...] The music needed a voice of comfort and that's my quintessential voice of comfort."
