'Music makes me want to stay alive': How music helps Andrew W.K. deal with his sadness and anxiety
Originally published on June 12, 2018
For over two decades, Andrew Wilkes-Krier, better known as Andrew W.K., has spread his message of partying and positivity. The party rocker hears from fans on social media all the time, and some of them say that his music has saved their lives. His songs have helped so many people that he was just named Person of the Year by the American Association of Suicidology.
His first new record in 10 years, You're Not Alone, is as life-affirming as ever. And while his message of positivity is inspirational to many of his fans, Andrew W.K. reveals to Tom Power that, first and foremost, he writes the songs to deal with his own bouts of sadness and anxiety. He discusses that as well as his love of the grand piano as he sits down for a rare solo session.
