Paint wars: can an artist claim ownership of a colour?

Stuart Semple talks about the creation of his latest paint, which he is not letting one particular artist use.
Stuart Semple is an artist who in response to a colour dispute with Anish Kapoor has created two pigments that Kapoor cannot use.

Artist Stuart Semple has been embroiled in a dispute over paint with another artist, Anish Kapoor. Kapoor has created what has been reported to be the darkest black called 'ventablack' — but is refusing to let any other artist use it.

In response, English artist Semple has created two pigments that anyone can use except Anish Kapoor. One, called "phaze," changes colour based on the surrounding temperature, and the other is being dubbed as the "pinkest pink."

Semple, who was on q a few months ago to discuss the creation of his pink colour, talks to q in an update on whether an artist can keep a colour all to himself.
