Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein weren't contractually obligated to write a theme song for the Duffer brothers' hit Netflix series, Stranger Things, but they knew they wanted to.

The duo, who are part of the band Survive, were already hired to write music for the show, but admitted that the Duffer brothers "didn't know what they wanted" when it came to a theme. What they did come up with, though, has now become a popular, Emmy-winning track.

Today, Dixon and Stein discuss the creation of the show's theme song, how their instrumental music best lends itself to visual accompaniment, and what's in store for season 2, which premieres on Netflix this Friday, Oct. 27.

Dixon and Stein will be performing the music from Stranger Things at concerts in Toronto on Nov. 3 and in Los Angeles on Nov. 8.
