Matt Mays channels pain and grief into heavy rock 'n' roll

The Halifax musician opens up about the pain and heartbreak that went into his latest album, Once Upon a Hell of a Time.
First Play Live: Matt Mays, Once Upon a Hell of a Time

Sometimes, when you're at your lowest, when you're feeling like things are as bad as they can get, it's comforting to turn on some sad songs and stew in those feelings. But sometimes, those songs can be too much, and what you really need is just some heavy rock 'n' roll. That's the case with musician Matt Mays.

On his new album, Once Upon a Hell of a Time, he's taken years worth of pain and grief and poured it into what he calls a "party-rock record for the brokenhearted."

Today, Mays will perform some of these songs live on q, and talk to host Tom Power about the record and how to channel hurt into loud rock music.
