Alex Strangelove star Daniel Doheny on playing a classic high school senior with a twist

The Canadian actor talks about his role in Netflix's Alex Strangelove, a teen comedy about a high school senior who realizes that he's gay.
Alex Strangelove premieres on Netflix Friday, June 8. (Netflix)

It's the premise of almost every teen comedy ever made: a high school senior goes on a mission to lose his virginity before he leaves for college, and along the way, he goes on an all-night bender, hitting up a bunch of crazy house parties that erupt in fist fights. Netflix's Alex Strangelove is the latest in this line of movies, but unlike the others, it comes with a twist.

Alex, the main character, actually already has a girlfriend named Claire, who wants to have sex with him. But as it turns out, Alex is more more interested in hanging out with his new friend, Elliott, who happens to be gay. Claire has to come to terms with the fact that maybe Alex likes Elliott more than just a friend.

Vancouver actor Daniel Doheny stars as the title character in Alex Strangelove. He spoke to Tom Power about what it's like to play a classic, male teen protagonist — with a twist.
