How Kathryn Macnaughton makes the abstract familiar

The Toronto-based artist finds inspiration in curious places.
(Melody Lau/CBC)

Kathryn Macnaughton is a Toronto-based artist who finds inspiration for her playful abstract paintings in curious places. She draws creative energy from collages, vintage magazines and digital illustrations, and has been exhibiting in Canada and abroad since 2010.

Macnaughton's multimedia approach to painting aims to capture present-day realities.

She will be giving a show called "Dualities: A Bridge Between Two Worlds" at the Bau-Xi Gallery in Vancouver from July 8 to 22.

Mcnaughton opens up to Tom Power about beating the odds in the tough world of visual art, how old issues of Playboy inspire her work, and why abstract painting is having a moment right now.
