Vinnie Karetak on Kiviuq Returns and the importance of reclaiming Inuit folk legends

Actor Vinnie Karetak joins Tom Power live in the q studio to talk about the importance of performing traditional Inuit stories in Inuktitut to southern audiences.

In a play called Kiviuq Returns: An Inuit Epic, Karetak is one of three actors who take on the role of Kiviuq, a character that appears across many stories shared by Inuit from Alaska to Greenland. Colonization threatened the existence of Kiviuq, whose stories were on the verge of being lost forever until they were given a second life.

Kiviuq Returns: An Inuit Epic, which is performed entirely in Inuktitut, runs at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto until Jan. 27, 2019.
