How podcasting became the medium for the people
Open Source Podcast's Christopher Lydon and 'media hacker' Dave Winer recall the origins of podcasting.
Podcasts are everywhere these days, and everyone from celebrities to your best friend probably has one. But where did podcasts get their start?
In a nutshell, they were the product of a chance meeting in Boston between a software developer and a longtime NPR host. Those two people, Christopher Lydon and Dave Winer, respectively, break down the origins of podcasting for us today.
Tracing it all the way back to 2003, Winer remembers trying to "find new forms of human expression using technology," which led him to approach Lydon to collaborate on an "MP3 audio file that can be syndicated."
The result, as Winer explains, is a "medium that's for the people."
