Indigenous artist Lou-ann Neel on the fight against 'fakelore'
Lou-ann Neel takes up a cause that was important to her celebrated grandmother.
Artist Lou-ann Neel is taking up her grandmother's fight to secure fair compensation for Indigenous artists in B.C., many of whom have seen their designs copied and their work reproduced without permission.
Neel, the granddaughter of celebrated carver Ellen Neel, joins guest host Piya Chattopadhyay to explain how her new "Authentic Indigenous" art labelling system helps stamp out "fakelore" on Canada's west coast and why she doesn't rely on proof of ancestry to decide which artists should be certified.
