Julie Delpy on Lolo and the value of realistic rom-coms

Julie Delpy makes romantic comedies — but not the kind where two cute people meet, overcome whimsical obstacles and wind up happy. As in Before Sunset and Before Midnight, her writing for Lolo acknowledges the hard parts of relationships and how challenges change over time. 

Delpy joins Shad to discuss her latest film, which follows high-strung Violette as she navigates tensions between her adult son and her new beau.

"Sometimes I see movies where women are in their late 40s ... and their problems don't really speak to me, because I had those problems when I was 25," notes Delpy, who writes, directs and stars in the film. 

She also weighs in on the difference between difficult and toxic relationships, and why she prefers practical romance.
