Jean-Marc Vallée on Demolition and starting over
Quebec filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée on the breakdown that precedes the breakthrough.
"If you want to fix something, you have to take everything apart and figure out what's important."
That's just one line from the "deeply moving" script that captivated Quebec filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée. The Dallas Buyers Club and Wild director joins Shad to discuss his latest film, Demolition, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an emotionally stunted widower struggling to process the death of his wife.
Vallée said, for him, the film is about a lost soul "trying to get back to what he was ... before he got numb."
He also explains why Demolition — unlike his earlier, lingering works — is packed with rapid cuts.
