Shad welcomes an in-studio performance from singer-songwriters Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) and Jesca Hoop, who have joined lyrical forces in a moving new album, Love Letter for Fire.
The pair performs two songs from the record — Know the Wild That Wants You and Valley Clouds— and sit down with Shad to discuss how they explored intimacy within their platonic creative partnership.
"Make a fool of yourself, early on," advises Hoop, who recalls sending Beam a very rough, unformed idea to kick off their collaboration. "I didn't edit it. I didn't think about it."
"I think she taught me to be spontaneous. And I taught her the power of editing," laughs Beam.
WEB EXTRA | Beam says one of his initial inspirations was Island in the Stream, a classic duet between Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, and a karaoke favourite. You can certainly see that influence in the official video for Valley Clouds.
