q's sports culture panel thinks beyond the play-by-play to weigh in on the societal impact of sports stories. Not a fan? Not a problem. Our panel watches much more than the scoreboard.

Today guest host Piya Chattopadhyay checks in with sports journalists Morgan Campbell, Dave Zirin, and CBC's Sonali Karnick. Both Zirin and Karnick are currently reporting from Brazil. Up for discussion:

  • Did Ryan Lochte and his teammates lie about being robbed in Rio? Local authorities are looking into claims that a group of American athletes were mugged Sunday morning. As their story twists and turns, our panel raises eyebrows. (Please note: this is a developing story! Read the latest here.)

  • Biles, Oleksiak, DeGrasse, Drouin. Just a few of the impressive names out of the Rio Olympic Games so far. But there are two names that tower above the rest: athletes who have proven themselves before, and again at these Games. So who is the greater Olympian? Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt or American swimmer Michael Phelps?

Bolt said he warned fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake that De Grasse could be a dark horse in the 100 metre race.

  • Zika, corruption, robbery, death, half-full stadiums, green water, doping, displacement and more — off the field, could this be these the worst Olympics ever? And if so, where does it leave the Olympic movement, going forward?
