Is it time to bring back the Arts Olympics?
Sylvia Sweeney, a lead organizer with the International Arts Games, makes the case for an 'Arts Olympics' renaissance.
As 2016 Olympics wind down in Rio, preparations have begun for an entirely different kind of games.
Few present-day fans know that Olympic organizers used to give out medals for artistic achievement. From 1912 to 1948, artists would compete in categories such as music, painting, literature and sculpture.
Now a Montreal-based group is interested in resurrecting that idea. In 2018, the International Arts Games are set to take place for the first time in Montreal.
Although the event is not officially affiliated with the Olympics, one of its lead organizers is. Former Olympian Sylvia Sweeney, who played basketball for Canada at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, joins guest host Piya Chattopadhyay to discuss the idea.
