Dear Prudence's Margo Howard says best advice is hard-won
Advice columnist Margo Howard, the former writer behind Dear Prudence, joins Piya Chattopadhyay to discuss her new memoir, Eat, Drink and Remarry: Confessions of a Serial Wife. Howard, who has been married four times, comes from a long line of advice givers -- she's the daughter of lauded advice columnist Ann Landers and the niece of the woman who wrote Dear Abby.
Howard reflects on how her failed marriages informed her work, whether she felt pressure to establish a voice different from her mother's, and the best piece of advice she ever received.
"I have found out that there are people who are not very bright who think that if you've had a colourful or rocky life, you're not equipped to give advice," Howard says. "But I think just the opposite is true."
Howard, who is now happily married to her fourth husband, prefers to draw from her own experiences -- rather than turn to experts -- especially on matters of love and marriage.
"One thing I wasn't doing when I was young was looking for quality or character," she says. "I hope people can learn from my mistakes."
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
