Comedian Natasha Rothwell on the joys of being 'basic'

Bust out the box wine, slip on some yoga pants, and enjoy Shad's chat with proudly basic Natasha Rothwell.

Go ahead and call Natasha Rothwell basic. Many would consider the slang term an insult, but the Starbucks-sipping, selfie-taking comedian embraces it on a basic level.

She joins Shad to discuss her viral anthem for women who sing Taylor Swift at karaoke.

"Everything is so aspirational all the time," says Rothwell, adding that it's just as valid to get through the day in yoga pants. She wants to speak for the people who struggle, and are not perfect all the time.

She also comments on all the one-dimensional expectations projected onto her — from sassiness to hyper-sexuality — and how she subverts them through comedy.

"Black women have earned the right to be basic," she laughs.
