Q

Should we pull the plug on summer vacation?

It's time for another deliberately divisive Good or Bad debate! This time we weigh the pros and cons of unstructured time away from school.

It's time for another deliberately divisive Good or Bad debate! This time we scrutinize summer vacations for kids. Do children benefit from unstructured time away from school? Or, as some research suggests, is two months of downtime too much for young minds?

Guest host Rachel Giese checks in with two guests:

  • Peter Gray — Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at Boston College — is summer lovin'. Gray is the author of the book Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life
  • Geoffrey Borman — Professor of Education and Sociology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison — is ringing the bell on the leisure binge. He describes the negative effects of the "summer slide" and why society should consider other models.

q: Listen to the debate and tell us: all things considered, do you think the two-month summer break is largely a good or bad thing? Pick a side in the poll (but, feel free to explain the nuances of your logic in the comments below!)
