Have 16 & Pregnant, Teen Mom affected birthrates?
Since MTV's 16 & Pregnant debuted in 2009, the reality TV show -- and spin-offs like Teen Mom -- have been attracting huge audiences ... and huge controversies. Critics accuse the shows of glamorizing teen pregnancy by making stars of the young women they feature.
Research released this week, however, suggests that having cautionary tales on TV may actually be driving the birthrate among teens downward.
Economics professor Phillip Levine, who co-authored the study, speaks to Jian about his team's findings, and how they came to estimate that 20,000 pregnancies were prevented or ended thanks to the shows.
Journalist Jessica Grose, on the other hand, argues that that the story has been oversimplified. She speaks to Jian about the "tabloid" effect the shows may be promoting and cites separate research that seems to contradict Levine's findings.
