q's sports panel thinks beyond the play-by-play to weigh in on the societal impact of sports stories. Not a fan? Not a problem. Our panel watches much more than the scoreboard.

Shad checks in with Toronto Star sports reporter Morgan Campbell, CBC host and reporter Sonali Karnick and sports editor at The Nation and host of the Edge of Sports podcast Dave Zirin

At issue today:

  • Blue Jays manager John Gibbons is facing backlash for sexist comments he made after Tuesday's loss. Jose Bautista was called out for a slide no longer allowed under new rules — implemented to prevent injuries — which likely cost the Jays the win.
  • Charles Barkley is calling for the 2017 NBA All-Star Game to be moved from its currently scheduled location in Charlotte, North Carolina. Barkley's comments come in light of the state's recently passed bill that restricts bathroom access based on biological sex and excludes LGBT people from anti-discrimination protections.
  • Philadelphia 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie resigned this week in a less than typical manner. Hinkie wrote a rambling and bizarre 13 page letter, which name-dropped Warren Buffet, Elon Musk, and former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln — just to name a few. Could this be the best mic drop-level resignation in sports history?
