Canada Reads winning team on what's next for Ru

TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey and winning author Kim Thúy discuss the attitude-changing power of this year's winning book.
Canada Reads 2015 book champion Cameron Bailey and winning author Kim Thúy join guest host Jelena Adzic to discuss Ru. In vignettes that shift back and forth between past and present, the book tells the story of a young woman forced to leave her Saigon home during the Vietnam War. (CBC Books)

Ru by Kim Thúy has been crowned the book most likely to break barriers following an intense season of Canada Reads. The annual battle of the books was particularly spirited this year, with gossip blogger Elaine Lui challenging Canada to "go rogue" and Martha Wainwright passionately defending the right to live free.

But in the end, a quieter but compelling read climbed to the top of Canada's reading list.

Today, the successful book defender — TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey — and winning author Kim Thúy share their reactions to the big win and why they feel the story of a young woman fleeing Saigon in the 1970s can inspire a renewel of compassion in Canada today.
