Comedian Gilbert Gottfried recalls the hellish experience of watching his own documentary

Films, TV shows, comedy specials, roasts, commercials — you name it, Gilbert Gottfried has done it. 

A new documentary about Gottfried, entitled Gilbert, promises to make you think of the comedian in a whole new way. The film, which will be screening at this year's Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, looks at Gottfried's upbringing, his family life and his relationship with his wife and two kids. It features highlights of his career that were hilarious, as expected, but also some that were emotional. 

It's those emotionally raw moments that still make Gottfried a little uncomfortable when he watches the documentary. "I've seen the film like, three times now and each time, it's what I envision hell to be like," the comedian reveals, admitting that he cringes when he sees filmmaker Neil Berkeley. "It's a weird thing to have a camera follow you like that."

Gilbert is screening at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto tonight, tomorrow night and on May 7. For more information, head over to the festival's website.
