More than two decades into their career, Spoon just keep getting better and better. The Austin, Tex. band released their ninth album, Hot Thoughts, earlier this year.

The band continues to look for ways to reinvent and experiment with their sound instead of settling into a comfort zone. On Hot Thoughts, for example, the band utilizes less guitar and is more keyboard heavy in its instrumentation — it is the first Spoon album to not feature acoustic guitar at all.

Lead singer Britt Daniel and keyboardist Alex Fischel stopped by q to play stripped-down versions of songs from the album and also to talk about how the new album represents lyrical as well as musical changes for the band.

Spoon will continue touring North America and Europe in the the next few months including stops in Edmonton (Aug. 30), Calgary (Aug. 31) and Vancouver (Sep. 2). Find out more details here.
