'I get lost in this woman's life': Jully Black on her personal connection to Caroline, or Change
Originally published on January 27, 2020
Jully Black has been an unmatched force in Canadian R&B and soul music for more than 20 years. She has four albums under her belt, major recognition from the Junos and she's shared the stage with some huge names: Elton John, Céline Dion and Etta James, to name a few.
Now, Black is making her musical theatre debut as the star of Caroline, or Change, about a house maid in Louisiana at the height of the civil rights movement. Black sees herself in the story as well as her aunts, but she especially sees her mother, who passed away from cancer just two years ago.
Canada's Queen of R&B joined host Tom Power live in the q studio to talk about her personal connection to the musical, and to take a look back at the last 20 years of her eclectic career. She started things off with a performance of the song I Got Four Kids, which you can watch below.
Caroline, or Change is running now at the Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto until Saturday, Feb. 15.
