It's been more than three decades since The Golden Girls first premiered, but the hugely popular sitcom continues to reach new generations of fans. At its heart, the show was about four fiercely independent women who were funny, crass and ready to take on topics like gay marriage, racism and AIDS — themes other sitcoms wouldn't touch.

Susan Harris is the television writer and producer behind The Golden Girls and Soap, along with 11 other network shows. She joined q guest host Saroja Coelho to talk about The Golden Girls' enduring popularity and how the show broke down walls in the sitcom genre.
