It's being called the scariest film of the year, and the next generation's The Exorcist.

Hereditary is the debut feature by writer/director Ari Aster and it won raves at Sundance. Now the terrifying trailer has been released.

In the film, Annie Graham (Toni Collette) and Steve Graham (Gabriel Byrne) are parents navigating family grief after the death of Annie's mother — but they soon discover disturbing secrets about their ancestry. The deeper they dig, the more they try to run from the nightmarish fate that they have inherited, but it's in their blood.

Vanity Fair said the film offers "a terrifically unsettling look at the howling despair of grief, combined with that good, old-fashioned fear of what demons we may have inherited from our parents."

"It's pure emotional terrorism, gripping you with real horror, the unspeakable kind, and then imbuing the supernatural stuff with those feelings," wrote the AV Club. "It didn't play me like a fiddle. It slammed on my insides like a grand piano."

Hereditary is slated for North American release June 8, and with a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's promising to be one of this summer's biggest hits.
