Twenty years ago, Nelly Furtado was discovered. As the story goes, Furtado, then a young, up-and-coming trip-hop singer with her group Nelstar, got her big break after auditioning to be part of an all-woman music event in Toronto — the Honey Jam showcase. She is "discovered" by Jarvis Church, a.k.a. Gerald Eaton of the Philosopher Kings, and the rest is history.

"That was a magical night," Furtado tells CBC Music. "I very clearly remember my outfit that I was going to wear, and getting on the subway, getting to Lee's Palace — I kind of had the eye of the tiger. It was the biggest thing that had happened to me. And wow, I got to meet a real famous person there: Jarvis Church, formerly known as Gerald Eaton of the Philosopher Kings."
