"What do you do?"
Depending what country you're in, that question is either an innocent ice-breaker or a rude intrusion.
The latest season of the podcast Bad With Money is all about unpacking those different attitudes about work and money around the world. Every week, host Gaby Dunn unapologetically examines the intersection of finances and social justice, bringing a queer, feminist, unabashedly radical point of view to conversations with journalists, politicians and activists.
In addition to being a podcast host, Gaby is also a best-selling author, comedian, YouTuber, journalist and LGBT activist. She joined us in the studio to chat about her own money woes, explain why she's "America's Deadbeat Sweetheart," and share some of her favourite podcasts. You can find her picks below.
Podcasts featured this week:
Bad With Money With Gaby Dunn: "Gaby explores work-life balance in The Netherlands, which has some of the world's shortest work hours, and in South Korea, which has some of the longest. First, she speaks with expat Jovi Paredes about the emphasis on vacation and mental health resources in The Netherlands. Then she talks with Los Angeles Times Seoul correspondent Victoria Kim about the persistent boss-employee hierarchy and emphasis on constant work in South Korea. This episode is all about work, work, work, work, work, work."
The Bechdel Cast: The Bechdel Cast is a weekly podcast about the representation of women in film, hosted by Los Angeles-based comedians Caitlin Durante and Jamie Loftus. In this episode they invited guests to talk about their favourite movies from a feminist perspective, framed by the question: does this pass the Bechdel Test?
Scam Goddess: Scam Goddess is a podcast dedicated to fraud and all those who practice it. Each week host Laci Mosley (aka Scam Goddess) keeps listeners up-to-date on current rackets, digs deep into the latest scams, and breaks down historic hoodwinks alongside some of your favourite comedians. In this episode, Laci and writer and comedian Lamar Woods talk about a nationwide Airbnb scam in the United States and the writer who uncovered it, going from victim to vindicator.
Dating Straight: "Amy Ordman and Jack Dodge, your new gay best friends, are intrigued by one thing — the straight agenda. Love is hard and sometimes you just need a little advice; and the best advice comes from those who shouldn't be giving it. Amy is as pessimistic as they come, and is a true believer in 'nothing lasts forever.' And Jack, is optimistic when it comes to love, believing healthy, long-lasting relationships do exist — he just hasn't found one yet. Here to make you laugh when you're getting over an ex, and keep you in check when you fall in love after the first date, Amy and Jack will always give it to you straight."
