Author Heather O'Neill on the sting of 'white trash'

The award-winning Canadian author Heather O'Neill has come a long way from her humble beginnings.

As a child, her family's furniture came from the garbage and she watched many of her friends be taken away to foster care. Her dad tried hard to protect her from being called 'white trash,' but the label caught up to her anyway.
