How a Winnipeg woman went from mail carrier to caregiver

Susan Green delivered mail to Winnipeg's North Point Douglas neighbourhood for years. And almost every day, she encountered Walter – an elderly man who lived on her route.

Susan Green delivered mail to Winnipeg's North Point Douglas neighbourhood for years. Almost every day, she encountered Walter – an elderly man who lived on the route. 

Green would check in on him, doing small errands like buying his stamps and helping with groceries. As Walter's health worsened, the two became closer.

At one point, Green called 911 after she hadn't seen Walter for several days. He'd fallen in the basement and was unable to get up. When he was sent to the hospital to recover, Walter was asked who would care for him at home.

He pointed at Green.  

After that, she became Walter's primary caregiver. He didn't have family or friends to help out, and Green was one of the few people who had daily contact with him in the last years of his life.

"He became a part of my family and I'm glad that I had an opportunity to help him out," said Green.
