One lone swimmer takes on the St. Lawrence River
David Merpaw started swimming in the St. Lawrence River this week to raise awareness of environmental issues in our rivers.
David Merpaw is a former tri-athlete and a self-described "river swimmer".
But the 50-year-old of Cornwall, Ontario is facing one of the biggest challenges of his life.
Merpaw is swimming the St. Lawrence River from Kingston to Quebec City. He's doing it to raise environmental awareness about the state of the river, as well as to support the work of the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences.
Day 6 caught up with Merpaw on a break from his swim on the shores of the St. Lawrence near Ingleside, Ontario.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story referred to David Merpaw's route as travelling upstream, when in fact he is swimming downstream, with the current.
