Mandela's former prison guard and friend Christo Brand

Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of captivity on Robben Island. He was a political prisoner of South Africa's apartheid governmentand a leader-in-waiting to the country he would unite through his vision, grace and compassion. While a prisoner at Robben Island Mandela forged a remarkable bond with one of his guards; Christo Brand. The two developed a code language they used to communicate in secret. They grew to trust one another and remained friends in the decades following Mandela's release. Christo Brand spoke to Brent from Cape Town, South Africa.
