Raising an Olympian
Behind every Olympian, there's a support team cheering them on. For Akeem Haynes, it's his mother.
Canadian sprinter Akeem Haynes competed in the 100 metre race at the Rio Olympics on August 14. He finished in 26th place, with a slower time than he had hoped for.
But that doesn't make his mother, Carlene Smith, any less proud of her son.
Carlene is a single mom to Akeem and still can't believe he's made it this far from the hard times they went through together when he was younger.
Akeem competes again tomorrow in the men's 4 by 100 metre relay race. And while Carlene couldn't be in Rio to cheer for her son, she will be watching from her home in Yellowknife.
She tells Candy what it took to raise an Olympian despite all the challenges thrown their way.
