A monument in honour of Trayvon Martin has recently appeared in Boston's Jamaica Plains neighbourhood, and the artist didn't ask for permission to put it there. Trayvon Martin is the unarmed African-American teenager who was shot to death in 2012 in Sanford, Florida.
But the artist who created the sculpture says his monument is also about much more than Trayvon Martin. It also representst the struggle to end racism in America. Sculptor Matthew Hincman tells guest host Susan Bonner that he built his sculpture to sit on top of what remains of an old lamppost in a historic section of Boston across the street from a Civil War monument.
The monument is small and unobtrusive, but Mr. Hincman says he hopes it provokes a big and noticeable debate. The bench he designed as public art years ago, shown below, was first removed by authorities, but was returned and is still on display today.
