Back in 1939, Jessie White completed all her requirements for a degree in stenography and bookkeeping, but couldn't afford to pay the $5 transcript fee. She went on without it and spent her working life as a bookkeeper.

A friend recently learned of Ms. White's situation and called the president of Maine's Beal College, who personally covered the transcript fee. Finally, last Friday, the 99-year-old Ms. White graduated in a special ceremony.

"I wanted that diploma for a long time," Ms. White tells Carol. "I spent all my money on the courses at school, so I didn't have any [money] left."

Five U.S. dollars in 1939 is about $86.72 Canadian today.
