Four years ago, Major Brauer was transferred from his post at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton, to CFB Halifax. So he put his house up for sale. But he was forced to settle for much less than he paid for it. He had reason to assume the federal government had his back.

He was wrong. So now he's taking the government to court.

"The savings for the children and for our retirement are gone. The equity in the house is gone. I've sold pretty much everything that's able to be sold".

Major Brauer has attempted to cover his significant legal costs through crowdsourcing.

"Our estimate right now is $20,000," he says. "How much [is it] going to cost? Well, that depends on how much of the taxpayers' money the Treasury Board wants to spend in fighting me."
