Meghan Patrick covers Alannah Myles' hit "Black Velvet" for our Junos 365 Sessions. This song won the 1990 Juno Award for single of the year.

The 2020 Junos have been cancelled since this article was first published.

As part of our coverage of the 2020 Juno Awards, we're inviting some of today's hottest Canadian acts to cover a past winner in the single of the year category.

Alannah Myles' bluesy "Black Velvet" won the award at the 1990 Junos, and the song's name immediately stood out to country singer Meghan Patrick when she was choosing what to cover.

"I remember it was one of my mom's favourite songs growing up," she told us during her session. "And we would listen to it in the car all the time and sing along to it. And you know, as I got older and I got more into music and singing. I just loved her voice, I loved that raspiness ... I mean, that melody, it's iconic."

Patrick stripped down Myles' original for an acoustic cover, accompanied by Chad Murphy on guitar and backup vocals. Patrick's country influences bleed in and out of her version of "Black Velvet," but one thing is consistent: her command of, and love for, the song.

"It's so great the way it is, and [Myles] sings it so well that I wanted to add a couple little things that were my own but I really wanted to keep it what it was, 'cause, I mean, if it's not broke, don't fix it."
